What sort of computer do I need to play multiplayer games on?

The computer requirements depend on what games you want to play. If you can play a game in single player mode without any trouble then it should be playable over a LAN. However if you are only just within the specifications you will be at a disadvantage when playing against people with more powerful computers with higher frame-rates and resolutions.

For example here are some system recommendations for some frequently played games at DGA.

Call of Duty

- 600MHz processor with Windows ® 98/ME

If your computer can play Call of Duty it can also play Counter-Strike 1.6 and mods, War Craft 3 and other games with similar features.
